HOUSTON (ICIS)--Brazil consumed 417,507 dry metric tons (dmt) of liquid caustic soda during the first two months of the year, up by 7.9% from the 386,974 dmt consumed during the same period in 2011, the country’s association of chloralkali industries, Abiclor, reported on Tuesday.
Brazil’s domestic production of liquid caustic soda for the first two months of 2012 was 233,814 dmt, 18.8% higher than the 196,806 dmt produced during the same period in 2011, Abiclor said.
Liquid caustic soda imports were 187,834 dmt in 2012, down by 3.6% from 194,857 dmt imported in 2011. The US was Brazil’s principal source with 179,149 dmt exported there this year, corresponding to 95.4% share of imports into Brazil.
Demand for caustic soda in Brazil remained healthy in line with a robust economy and dynamic private and public construction, sources said.
