LONDON (ICIS)--Synthos has started commercial sales of high performance neodymium-polybutadiene rubber (Nd-PBR) made with Nd catalyst technology licensed by Michelin, the Poland-based producer said on Wednesday.

Sources at the company said that an operating profit of at least zlotych (Zl) 70m ($22.2m, €17.0m) from revenues of Zl600m should be generated in 2012 by the Nd-PBR produced by a new 80,000 tonne/year installation in Oswiecim, southern Poland.

Global tyre maker Michelin is a customer for part of the production under a long-term contract while the remainder of the output is being sold under Synthos’ own brand to other manufacturers, Synthos added.

In December, Erste Group Bank said that rubber producers that have invested in state-of-the-art polybutadiene rubber capacity stand ready to benefit from new EU 'green tyre' labelling that will take effect in 2012.

In mid-2010, Synthos and joint-venture partner, Czech petrochemical producer Unipetrol, commissioned a new 120,000 tonne/year butadiene unit in Kralupy nad Vltavou, in the Czech Republic.

Synthos, the 49% partner in the joint-venture, said the plant provided it with the backward integration it needed to capitalise on tyre manufacturers' demand for high performance rubber.
