SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Dalian Petrochemical has shut its 100,000 tonne/year styrene monomer (SM) unit and its downstream 40,000 tonne/year expandable polystyrene (EPS) unit at Dalian in Liaoning province for 40 days of maintenance, a company source said on Thursday.

The two units were shut on 10 March, according to the source.

Dalian Petrochemical has no plans to shut its 290,000 tonnes/year of upstream benzene unit in Dalian, added the source.

The company will ship 1,000 tonnes of SM to Jiangsu on 16 March to fulfil existing orders, a market player said.

As a result of the shutdown, spot sales and contract SM supply for April will be cancelled, and north China SM prices are likely to rise amid the reduced supply and recovery in downstream demand, he added.

Dalian Petrochemical is a subsidiary of PetroChina, which is owned by China National Petroleum Corp.
