HOUSTON (ICIS)--Germany’s Bayer MaterialScience is seeking an increase of 10 cents/lb ($220/tonne, €168/tonne) in North America for its polycarbonate (PC), effective 1 April, market sources said on Friday.
Bayer officials would not confirm the initiative.
However, two other sources provided evidence of the proposed increase, which would be for the US, Canada and Mexico.
One buyer said, “I don’t see how the market will absorb this.”
The increases have been based on the increases in feedstock costs, primarily benzene and propylene.
Bayer has already put forth a 17 cent/lb increase for its PC.
That proposal had an effective date of 1 March, and was the largest single increase of the three PC producers in North America.
Styron proposed a 12 cent/lb increase for 1 February and a 13 cent/lb increase for 1 March.
SABIC Innovative Plastics put forth an increase of 11 cents/lb on 13 February, and a 9 cents/lb increase for 12 March. It has also proposed an increase of 10 cents/lb for 2 April.
PC currently has spot prices of $1.63-1.78/lb for general purpose moulding and extrusion in bulk and $1.68-1.83/lb for general purpose moulding and extrusion in package.($1 = €0.76)
