US Danimer to expand bioplastic plant with Myriant partnership

ARLINGTON (ICIS)--US biopolymer producer Danimer Scientific is planning to expand its bioplastic plant in Bainbridge, Georgia as part of its newly announced alliance with bio-succinic acid producer Myriant, a company official said late Thursday.

Danimer and Myriant announced on Thursday that the companies will develop eco-friendly, cost-effective bio-based plastics containing Myriant’s bio-succinic acid.

Danimer is producing PLA-based extrusion coatings for paper and recently launched bio-based hot-melt adhesives manufactured at its 50m lb/year facility in Bainbridge, Georgia.

Danimer also supplies additives and modifiers to biopolymer processors.

The company is already expanding its facility to 100m lb/year later this but further expansion is planned later this year as a result of the Myriant partnership, said Blake Lindsey, president of Danimer Scientific, who spoke at the BIOPLASTEK forum held in Arlington in Virginia on 28-30 March.

“We will further announce later this year how we are going to use these biomaterials, what further value we can add to them,” said Lindsey.

He added that Danimer has already successfully demonstrated production of numerous bio-succinic acid containing materials at its Bainbridge, Georgia product development centre working collaboratively with Myriant.

Danimer is also working on polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) bio-based monomer.

Its sister company Meredian is currently building a 30m lb/year unit in the Bainbridge facility, which is expected to open later this year.

Meredian expects to have a 630m lb/year total PHA production capacity by 2016.
