Explosion at Germany’s Marl chemical park kills one worker

LONDON (ICIS)--One worker was killed and another severely injured in an explosion on Saturday at an Evonik plant at the Marl chemical park near Duisburg, Germany, officials said.

Infracor, which manages the Marl chemical park, said the accident happened at around 13:40 local time at an Evonik plant that produces cyclododecatriene (CDT).

Infracor added that there had been no danger for surrounding residents. It did not disclose if or to what extent the accident affected chemical production at the site.

According to information on Evonik’s website, cyclododecatriene is used as a starting material for flame retardants, flavours and fragrances, among other applications.

Evonik could not immediately be reached for additional comment.
