CP Chem to build 250,000 t/yr on-purpose 1-hexene plant in Texas

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Chevron Phillips Chemical (CP Chem) will build an on-purpose 1-hexene plant at its Cedar Bayou site in Baytown, Texas, the US-based petrochemicals major said on Monday.

CP Chem said the facility will have a capacity of up to 250,000 tonnes/year, making it the world’s largest plant of its kind.

Construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2012, with start-up of production expected in the first quarter of 2014, the company said.

The plant will run on CP Chem’s proprietary on-purpose 1-hexene technology, which produces co-monomer grade 1-hexene from ethylene, it said. The company already uses the technology at a joint-venture plant in Qatar, it added.

“Approval of this 1-hexene project represents a significant milestone for our business and it supports our growth strategy as a leader in the production of normal alpha olefins,” said Mitch Eichelberger, general manager of normal alpha olefins and polyalphaolefins for Chevron Phillips Chemical.

The company did not disclose how much the project will cost. A CP Chem media official was not immediately available for comment.
