SAN ANTONIO, Texas (ICIS)--OCI Nitrogen plans to restart a Texas methanol plant in May, sources close to the plant said on Monday on the sidelines of the International Petrochemical Conference (IPC)..

The plant in Beaumont plant began producing ammonia in December 2011.

OCI Nitrogen's parent company and the facility’s owner, Egypt-based Orascom Construction Industries, said earlier this year that ammonia production at the plant will reach 250,000 tonnes/year and methanol 750,000 tonnes/year.

When methanol production at Beaumont resumes, the Texas unit will be one of two North American methanol plants to be restarted within approximately a year. Methanex restarted a methanol plant in Medicine Hat, Alberta, in April 2011.

In May 2011, a group that included backers from Texas, Europe and Egypt bought the mothballed plant from Eastman Chemical, saying they would they would spend $65m (€49m) in acquisition and startup costs. Eastman documents show that the company received $15m (€11m) for the plant.

In November, Orascom Construction Industries said it had acquired full ownership of the plant.

Hosted by the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM), the IPC continues through Tuesday.
