Europe March chlorine output up 5.6%, caustic soda stocks down 2.5%

LONDON (ICIS)--Average European daily chlorine production in March increased by 5.6% from February, while inventories of co-product caustic soda decreased by 2.5% in the same period, industry body Euro Chlor said on Thursday.

Average daily production of chlorine for the region comprising the EU27, Norway and Switzerland, stood at 27,634 tonnes in March, up from 26,169 tonnes in February. Caustic soda stocks were at 250,036 tonnes, down from 256,523 tonnes in the previous month.

Euro Chlor's year-on-year figures showed that average daily chlorine production was 1.9% lower than in March 2011, while caustic soda stocks were 6,627 tonnes above the March 2011 level of 243,409 tonnes.

Chlorine capacity utilisation in March stood at 80.2%, up from 76.0% in the previous month, but down from 81.5% in  March 2011.
