US environmental group challenges LNG exports

HOUSTON (ICIS)--The Sierra Club is challenging the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from a facility near Freeport, Texas, the US environmental group said on Monday.

The environmental organisation said it filed a formal protest with the US Department of Energy (DOE) on Friday, challenging a proposal to export LNG before the department releases studies “on the effects of exporting as much as a fifth of the domestic gas supply – and the public health and environmental damage caused by increased fracking”.

The Sierra Club said the Freeport export proposal would lead to increased air and water pollution in Texas and cause economic harm to the country. The group said the region surrounding the proposed export site already fails to meet environmental standards.
