US ExxonMobil reports flaring during Texas olefins start-up

HOUSTON (ICIS)--ExxonMobil experienced flaring during the start-up of its olefins unit at Baytown, Texas, the company said in a regulatory filing made available on Monday.

The flaring began on Saturday at 11:16 hours Houston time (16:16 hours GMT) and emissions were expected to end by the same time on Monday, the company said in a report with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

“Flow to the flare was reduced,” ExxonMobil said. “There has been no impact on production and we expect to meet our contractual commitments.”

ExxonMobil said last week it was in the process of restarting one of its Baytown crackers in Texas, which had been down for planned routine maintenance since 1 February

ExxonMobil has two crackers in Baytown with a combined capacity of 2.2m tonnes/year.

Market sources said the unit that was down for maintenance was Baytown 1, which has 1m tonnes/year of capacity.
