HOUSTON (ICIS)--US chlor-alkali production was 86% of capacity in March, down from 87% in February, a US trade group said on Tuesday.

US chlor-alkali production in March was 994,263 tons (903,602.95 tonnes) of chlorine and 1,051,706 tons of caustic soda, the Chlorine Institute said.

The slight downtick in production was not surprising, reflecting a flatness in February although underlying demand for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a major downstream product of chlorine, remains strong, one market participant said.

Another market source called the decrease “nominal”.

Major US chlor-alkali producers include Formosa Plastics USA, Georgia Gulf, Shintech, Occidental Chemical (OxyChem) and Westlake.
