US Honeywell to test bio-based jet fuel in Canada

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Honeywell plans to test its bio-based jet fuel in a series of flights scheduled to take place in Canada later this month, the US diversified industrial firm said on Wednesday.

Honeywell will use a “Green Jet Fuel” produced from a non-food industrial oilseed crop that was grown in Canada’s Saskatchewan province last summer, it said. The feedstock is derived from the plant brassica carinata, and it is optimised for use as a biofuel feedstock, the company added.

Honeywell said that it will test its bio-based jet fuel at higher ratios than in previous demonstration flights, which have been conducted using a 50:50 ratio of biofuel and conventional petroleum-based jet fuel.

The flights will be conducted on a modified Falcon 20 twin-engine jet.

Honeywell said that the tests, by its UOP petrochemicals technology division, will be “the world's first comprehensive test programme using a new bio-feedstock specifically designed for biofuel production.”
