SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Mitsui Chemicals has shut its 400,000 tonne/year purified terephthalic acid (PTA) at Iwakuni following a blast at a nearby resorcinol facility, a company source said on Monday.
“We are investigating the extent of the damage, but it seems limited at this point in time,” the source said.
“We are also considering if a force majeure needs to be declared,” he added.
The source said it is not known when the company can restart the PTA facility.
The explosion and fire at the resorcinol plant occurred at around 02:15 hours Japan time on 22 April (17:15 GMT on 21 April), killing one worker and injuring 21 workers and nearby residents, Mitsui Chemicals said in a statement on Sunday.
The fire, which spread to a cymene plant at the site, was brought under control at 17:15 hours, the company said.
The accident caused extensive damage to the windows and roofs of 14 plants at the site, the company added.
Resorcinol is an adhesive agent for wood and tyres.
