SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co (ZRCC) has restarted its 165,000 tonne/year butadiene (BD) plant in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, on 2 May after a 21-day turnaround, a source close to the company said on Wednesday.

The company, a major BD producer and a subsidiary of Sinopec, shut the unit on 10 April for maintenance, according to the source, adding that the producer had initially planned to restart the unit on 10 May

“We are planning to achieve on-spec production on 6-7 May,” the source said.

The restart will increase BD supply in the domestic market in May, a market player said.

ZRCC was selling BD products at yuan (CNY) 23,500/tonne ($3,742/tonne) EXW (ex-works) on 2 May, down by CNY2,500/tonne EXW from 10 April, according to Chemease, an ICIS service in China.

BD prices may fall on weak demand from the downstream butadiene rubber (BR) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) sectors, another market player said.

($1 = CNY6.28)
