The 490,000 tonne/year plant located in Geismar, Louisiana, US was idled in 2003 due to high gas prices.
The Canada-headquartered company announced in February 2011 that it was beginning the process of restarting the unit, which was expected to take around 18 months – implying a restart in the third quarter of 2012.
The delay to the restart is due to the plant needing more repairs than originally anticipated, particularly structural repairs, the official added.
PotashCorp currently operates four ammonia plants in Trinidad and one each in Georgia, Ohio and Tennessee. The plants produce a combined total of about 3.4m tonnes/year.
