MELBOURNE (ICIS)--China’s Zhongchuang Chemical plans to start up a new 100,000 tonne/year 2-butyl acetate plant at Yueyang in Hunan province next month, a company source said on Friday.

“Construction of the new plant [at Yueyang] is almost complete, and we expect to start it up in the second half of June,” he said.

The new plant at Yueyang will boost the firm’s overall 2-butyl acetate capacity to 260,000 tonnes/year, the source said.

The company currently operates a 60,000 tonne/year 2-butyl acetate plant at Yueyang and a 100,000 tonne/year unit at Huizhou in Guangdong province.

Spot prices of 2-butyl acetate are at yuan (CNY) 7,200-7,300/tonne ($1,142-$1,159/tonne) EXW (ex-works) in east China, according to Chemease, an ICIS service in China.

2-butyl acetate, which is derived from butane, is a solvent used in paint and coating, as well as an octane booster in gasoline blending.
