Shell cracker in Texas goes down after steam outage

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Shell has shut down its OP2 Deer Park cracker in Texas, citing a steam outage, according to a regulatory filing made available on Friday.

"[The unit] had an unplanned shutdown due to the loss of steam from a third party steam provider," the company said in the filing with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). The shutdown was expected to be brief, market sources said, adding that Shell was already restarting the unit.

The information could not be confirmed with Shell because a company spokesperson declined to comment on the outage, citing competitive reasons.

This was the second outage for Shell this week, as the company also had a brief shutdown in Deer Park on Tuesday.

Shell has 835,000 tonnes/year of ethylene capacity in Deer Park.
