Russian major prepares to commission Tobolsk-Polymer polypropylene project later this year

SIBUR expects to begin commercial production at its 500,000 tonne/year polypropylene (PP) project in Tobolsk, Siberia, Russia, in the first half of 2013.

Commissioning of the Tobolsk-Polymer PP plant and integrated propane dehydrogenation (PDH) plant is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2012, a press service representative of the Russian group said.

Mikhail Karisalov, deputy chairman of SIBUR's board and director general of Tobolsk-Polymer, said in a statement that 72% of the construction and installation work for the project has been finished. Detailed engineering plans have been completed and all the oversized equipment for the PDH and PP plants are now on site, he said.

All construction contracts relating to major works have been agreed with building contractors, and Sibur expects the workforce employed by contractors to reach 4,700 in May, Karisalov said.

Commissioning of the facilities has already begun and, overall, the project is 90% complete, he added.

SINOPEC TO BUY STAKE IN SIBUR NBR PLANT IN RUSSIA
SIBUR intends to create a joint venture with China state-owned energy company Sinopec for the production of nitrile rubber (NBR) in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

Sinopec would acquire a 25% stake in Sibur's 42,000 tonne/year NBR plant in Krasnoyarsk, and the companies said they would consider expanding the plant's production capacity to 56,000 tonnes/year.

"A final decision on the establishment of the joint venture is expected by the end of 2012," they said in a joint statement. ­Sinopec president Wang Tianpu and SIBUR CEO Dmitry Konov signed a cooperation agreement during a Russian-Chinese investment forum.
