Evonik awards engineering work for new Asia polyamide 12 plant

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Jacobs has won a contract from German specialty chemicals major Evonik for work on a planned polyamide 12 project which will be built at a yet-to-be-disclosed location in Asia, the US-based petrochemicals engineering firm said on Tuesday.

Jacobs said it was working with Evonik's project team in Marl, Germany, to develop the conceptual design for the new plant, which will be based on Evonik's existing plants in Germany.

Jacobs did not disclose where in Asia the plant will be built and it did not comment on capacities or financial terms.

An Evonik executive said at an industry event in Shanghai last month that the plant would have a capacity of 20,000 tonnes/year of polyamide 12 (or nylon 12), with start-up expected in 2014. He did not disclose the exact location either.

Global polyamide 12 markets have been left short of supplies following an explosion at Evonik’s cyclododecatriene (CDT) plant in Marl on 31 March, when two workers were killed. CDT is used to make laurolactam which, in turn, is used as a monomer in nylon 12.

Evonik has said it expects to fully repair the CDT plant by December.
