HOUSTON (ICIS)--US ethyl acetate (etac) exports in March jumped 57% year on year, largely on more shipments to Latin America, and imports rose 26% on more material from Mexico, according to data released Thursday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

Etac exports totalled 1,756 tonnes, compared with 1,115 tonnes in the same month of 2011. Imports totalled 3,959, compared with 3,131 tonnes in March 2011.

The export boost came from 815 tonnes shipped to Ecuador, Venezuela and Chile, which did not receive any material in the same month last year.

Etac imports from Mexico increased by 888 tonnes to 2,007 tonnes, compared with 1,119 tonnes in February 2011.

Etac is a major ingredient in inks and coatings, particularly in nail polish. Major US etac producers include Celanese, Eastman Chemical and Solutia, whose material is marketed by Celanese.
