SINGAPORE (ICIS)--US-based SI Group started construction of its phenolic resin site in Nanjing, in the Jiangsu province of east China on 11 May, a source close to the company said on Monday.

SI Group announced in February that it will invest $30m (€23m) to build a phenolic resin manufacturing site in the Nanjing Chemical Industry Park (NCIP).

The investment at the site now has now increased to $42m. The initial capacity of the site will be an updated 36,000 tonnes/year, from 30,000 tonnes/year previously announced, and is expected to start up in May 2013, according to the source.

Capacity may be expanded to 70,000 tonnes/year around 2015. The investment also includes a 15,000 tonne/year formaldehyde plant, the source said.

Both of the plants will produce phenolic resins in lump, pastille, liquid, and powder forms to serve the rubber, abrasive, friction, impregnation, and refractory markets.

SI Group is a leading developer and manufacturer of chemical intermediates, phenolic resins, alkylphenolic resins, and alkylated phenols.

The company also focuses on seven key market segments including rubber resins, industrial resins, adhesive resins, fuels and lubricants, plastic additives, surfactants, and engineering plastics.
