HOUSTON (ICIS)--Butamax Advanced Biofuels has been granted a patent in the US for producing isobutanol (IBA) from recombinant micro-organisms on a commercial scale, the US-based chemical producer said on Tuesday.

The patent, granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office, also covers the extraction and distillation of IBA, as well as steps for recovering the distillers grains byproduct produced during IBA fermentation, Butamax added.

Butamax said it would add the new patent to ongoing litigation against US-headquartered renewable chemicals producer Gevo for alleged patent infringement.

Butamax was formed in 2009 as a joint venture between US-headquartered chemical producer DuPont and UK-based producer BP.
