MELBOURNE (ICIS)--East China-based Wuxi Baichuan Chemical Industrial plans to start test runs at its new 300,000 tonne/year ethyl acetate (etac)/butyl acetate (butac) swing plant at Nantong in Jiangsu province at the end of this month, a company source said on Thursday.

The company plans to produce 100,000 tonnes/year of etac and 200,000 tonnes/year of butac when the plant begins commercial operation.

Baichuan currently operates a 200,000 tonne/year etac/butac swing plant at Jiangyin, also in Jiangsu province, and is producing butac at 100% capacity.

Etac, which is mainly produced by the esterification of ethanol with acetic acid, is used in coating formulations such as epoxys and vinyls, as well as in solvent applications for inks and food.

Butac, which is derived from acetic acid and n-butanol (NBA), is mainly used in the manufacturing of paints and coatings for the furniture, construction and automotive sectors.
