MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--Brazil’s Braskem has signed an agreement with Australia-based Plantic Technologies to use sugarcane-derived green polyethylene (PE) in Plantic’s eco-products, Braskem said on Thursday.
The deal is in line with Braskem’s strategic vision of becoming the global leader in sustainable chemicals by 2020, the company said.
“Working with Plantic’s renewably sourced products and our green PE will see retailers and brand owners provided with choices of packaging, which are not only better for the environment, but provide superior performance,” said Braskem director Marcelo Nunes.
Plantic Technologies manufactures film and sheet products based on corn-derived bioplastics at its plants in Australia and Germany.
The addition of Braskem’s green PE will increase the renewable content of the Plantic eco-plastic product range to 90%, without comprising the protective properties already offered by the products, Braskem said.
“Plantic’s eco-plastic products incorporating Braskem’s green PE provides the highest renewable content packaging on the market,” said Brendan Morris, CEO of Plantic Technologies.
Plantic eco-plastic trays and film products will not require investment in new technologies for processing or packaging, the company said.
“Our partnership with Braskem combines two plastics to create an ultra-protective packaging with unique operational characteristics and environmental benefits,” said Morris.
