HOUSTON (ICIS)--Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) imports from Colombia are entering Venezuela normally after a conflict at the border, sources in Colombia said on Thursday.

Earlier Thursday, Venezuelan industry participants noted concern over disturbances at the border that caused imports into Venezuela to slow down.

Traffic was halted from Colombia to Venezuela after Venezuelan gasoline was allegedly found being smuggled into Colombia at the Amunol bridge in the municipality of Guajira, and a confrontation with the Venezuelan army left at least three people wounded, according to media reports.

Venezuelan PVC producer Pequiven is importing 4,000-5,000 tonnes/month for May, June, July and August, sources close to the negotiations said.

The PVC imports are split among two US suppliers and one Colombian, but the volumes discussed with each are unclear. The sources said prices from each of the suppliers will be in line with international offers into the region, although specific resin prices being negotiated were not revealed.

Sources said the PVC purchase has been finalised with one of the US suppliers and with the Colombian supplier. It remains unclear at what stage are the discussions with the other US supplier.

Currently, the only PVC available in the Venezuelan market is the domestic resin produced by Pequiven, which is sold at government-controlled prices of $737/tonne (€582/tonne) DEL for pipe grade and $788/tonne DEL for general purpose.

Once the imported material is ready for domestic sales, Pequiven will offer PVC at a higher price, determined by the ratio of cheaper domestic resin and more expensive imports in the mix sold to private industry, sources said.
