KUALA LUMPUR (ICIS)--JX Nippon Oil & Energy shut its 400,000 tonne/year paraxylene (PX) unit in Chita this week for scheduled maintenance, a company source said on Friday.

The plant is expected to be down for 50 days and will be restarted early July, the source said at the sidelines of the 34th Asia Petrochemical Industry Association Conference (APIC) in Kuala Lumpur.

Contracted volumes are not expected to be affected by the shutdown, the source said.

JX Nippon Oil & Energy is a major supplier of PX to downstream purified terephthalic acid (PTA) makers in China, Taiwan, Japan and south Korea.

The Japanese aromatics major operates a total of eight PX facilities in Japan with a combined nameplate capacity 2.57m tonnes/year.

APIC runs from 17-18 May.
