SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Xinjiang Zhongtai Chemical is planning to close its 175,000 tonne/year polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and 141,000 tonne/year caustic soda plants at Urumqi in Xinjiang province by 30 June because of environmental concerns, it said over the weekend.

The closure of the two plants will not have an impact on the company’s annual operating performance, it said in a statement to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.

The company plans to bring on stream the first and second phase of its new project located at Fukang in Xinjiang province from September to December 2012, according to the statement. Each phase includes the start-up of a 400,000 tonne/year PVC plant and a 300,000 tonne/year caustic soda plant, the statement added.

The company will become the largest PVC manufacturer in China after the expansion is completed, an industry source said.

Its annual PVC production expected to reach a total of 1.7m tonnes/year after the expansion, according to Chemease, an ICIS service in China.
