SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Bluestar Petrochemical plans to achieve on-spec production at its 30,000 tonne/year butadiene (BD) unit at Tianjin on 23-24 May after restarting it on 21 May, a source close to the company said on Monday.

The company shut the plant on 14 April because of feedstock butylenes (C4) shortage.

The restart of the plant is likely to increase BD supply in the domestic market in May, a market player said.

Sinopec sold BD at yuan (CNY) 19,000/tonne ($3,002/tonne) EXW (ex-works) on 21 May, down by CNY7,000/tonne from 14 April, according to Chemease, an ICIS service in China.

BD prices may continue to fall because of weak demand from the downstream butadiene rubber (BR) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) sectors, an industry source said.
