SANYA, China (ICIS)--Asian methyl methacrylate (MMA) demand is set to grow by 2-3% until 2020, an official of Japan’s Mitsubishi Rayon Corp (MRC) said on Thursday.

MRC, the world’s largest MMA producer, estimated that global MMA demand is set to hit 4.5m tonne/year by 2020, said Hisato Haseda, Director of Chemicals Department 1 of MRC. The current global demand is estimated at 3m tonne/year.

Asia is expected to experience a stronger growth of 4-5% at over 2.5m tonne/year by 2020 due to the stronger economic growth in the region, MRC estimated. Asia’s  demand in 2012 is estimated at close to 2m tonnes/year.

Haseda was speaking in Japanese at a presentation at the 2012 9th China International Acrylate & MMA Forum.

MMA is used to produce polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) polymer, cast sheets and acrylic resins for coatings and emulsions.

The one-day event is being held in Sanya, Hainan, China on 24 May.

Supply is also expected to increase as new capacities come on line over the next 2 years on the back of growing demand, he added.

‘There are two MMA projects in 2012 alone, he  added.

The new capacities are likely to amount to an extra 608,000 tonnes/year over the next two years, ICIS estimated.
