Japan MMA output likely to reduce on electricity cuts - producers

SANYA, China (ICIS)--Japanese methyl methacrylate (MMA) output is likely to be cut in the summer months on possible electricity shortages and feedstock disruptions, producers said on Thursday.

Producers, speaking at the sidelines of the 9th China International Acrylate & MMA Forum in Sanya, China, said that MMA production may have to be cut in Japan as local producers could be hit by power shortages. However, at present, most producers added they had not yet received any official statement.

MMA producers will also face production constraints of other feedstocks, because of lower crackers rates in Asia, they said.

Some Japanese producers may also face output strains because of a lack of supply of hydroquinone, which is used as a polymerisation inhibitor for acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile.

Hydroquinone could be in short supply as a result of a shutdown at Mitsui Chemicals' Iwakuni-Ohtake works after an explosion and fire at the site on 22 Apr 2012, they said.

Mitsubishi Rayon Corp (MRC), the world’s largest MMA producer said it was not affected by the accident at Mitsui Chemicals, as it procures its hydroquinone from other local producers and also from Europe.

Japan is capable of producing 554,000 tonnes of MMA per annum, according to ICIS data.
