MELBOURNE (ICIS)--East China-based Wuxi Baichuan Chemical Industrial on 27 May started test runs at its new 300,000 tonne/year ethyl acetate (etac)/butyl acetate (butac) swing plant at Nantong in Jiangsu province, a company source said on Wednesday.

The company plans to produce 100,000 tonnes/year of etac and 200,000 tonnes/year of butac when the plant begins commercial operation.

Baichuan has been producing solely butac at its existing 200,000 tonne/year etac/butac swing plant at Jiangyin, also in Jiangsu province.

The company is running the Jiangyin plant at “no higher than 60% of capacity” because of weak domestic and export demand for the solvent, the source said.

Domestic butac prices in eastern China declined to yuan (CNY) 8,700-8,900/tonne ($1,372-1,404/tonne) ex-works this week, compared with CNY9,300-9,400/tonne ex-works in the second half of April, according to Chemease, an ICIS service in China.

Etac, which is mainly produced by the esterification of ethanol with acetic acid, is used in coating formulations such as epoxys and vinyls, as well as in solvent applications for inks and food.

Butac, which is derived from acetic acid and n-butanol (NBA), is mainly used in the manufacturing of lacquers and coatings for the furniture, construction and automotive sectors.
