KUALA LUMPUR (ICIS)--Global demand for natural gas will grow rapidly and demand growth for unconventional natural gas may reach 40% in the next 20 years, an ExxonMobil executive said on Tuesday.

“Natural gas will gradually replace coal in the future and may become the second most-used primary energy after coal by 2025,” said ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson at the 25th World Gas Conference (WGC2012).

Asia will see fast growth in the consumption [of natural gas], driven by an ongoing expansion of population. Petrochemical and power generation will be the two biggest industries for natural gas use,” he said.

The five-day conference ends on Friday.
