HOUSTON (ICIS)--US caustic soda exports in April were 276,392 tonnes, down 33% from the same month one year earlier, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Friday.
Exports in April were also 36% lower than the 431,824 tonnes shipped in March, the ITC said.
US production of caustic soda has fallen in recent months along with chlorine, its by-product in the electrolysis process. Chlorine is used extensively in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). PVC demand, in both the domestic and export markets, has been dampened recently.
Brazil was the top destination for US caustic soda exports in April at 171,967 tonnes, followed by Canada, Mexico and Suriname.
Major producers of US caustic soda include Georgia Gulf, Formosa Plastics, OxyChem, Shintech, Dow, Olin and PPG Industries.
