HOUSTON (ICIS)--Brazil consumed 1.10m dry metric tonnes (dmt) of liquid caustic soda from January to May 2012, up by nearly 6% from the 1.04m dmt consumed during the same period in 2011, the country’s association of chloralkali industries, Abiclor, reported on Wednesday.

Brazil’s domestic production of liquid caustic soda between January and May of 2012 was 585,598 dmt, 8.1% higher than the 541,740 dmt produced during the same period in 2011, Abiclor said.

Liquid caustic soda imports were 524,748 dmt in 2012, up by 2.5% from 512,011 dmt imported in 2011. The US was Brazil’s principal source with 497,128 dmt exported there this year, corresponding to 94.7% share of imports into Brazil.

Major markets consuming liquid caustic soda in Brazil in 2012 are paper and cellulose with 133,154 dmt, chemical/petrochemical with 95,988 dmt and metallurgy with 87,820 dmt.

Demand for caustic soda in Brazil remained healthy despite a slower-than-expected economy, sources said.
