US natural soda ash production slumps by 11% in April

MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS) --US production of natural soda ash in April slumped by 11% month on month, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Wednesday.

US production fell to 861,000 tonnes, down from 964,000 tonnes in March, the survey said.

Wyoming trona production in April was 1.38m tonnes, according to the data.

Mexico and Brazil were the largest importers of US soda ash from the beginning of the year, importing 269,000 tonnes and 182,000 tonnes, respectively.

Soda ash is primarily used in glassmaking, the manufacture of other inorganic chemicals, detergents, flue gas desulphurisation, water treatment and in pulp and paper manufacturing.

US producers include Solvay, OCI Chemical, FMC and General Chemical Industrial Products.
