MELBOURNE (ICIS)--Eastern China-based solvents maker Wuxi Baichuan Chemical Industrial this week increased the operating rate at its ethyl acetate (etac)/butyl acetate (butac) swing plant at Jiangyin in Jiangsu province, a company source said on Thursday.

The company raised the plant’s operating rate to about 80% of capacity from roughly 50%, after clearing existing inventories in recent weeks, the source said.

Wuxi Baichuan is producing solely butac at the swing plant, which has a nameplate capacity of 200,000 tonnes/year.

Separately, the company is conducting test runs at its new 300,000 tonne/year etac/butac swing plant at Nantong, also in Jiangsu province.

Wuxi Baichuan plans to produce 100,000 tonnes/year of etac and 200,000 tonnes/year of butac when the new plant begins commercial operation.

Etac, which is mainly produced by the esterification of ethanol with acetic acid, is used in coating formulations such as epoxys and vinyls, as well as in solvent applications for inks and food.

Butac, which is derived from acetic acid and n-butanol (NBA), is mainly used in the manufacturing of lacquers and coatings for the furniture, construction and automotive sectors.
