HOUSTON (ICIS)--Producers will likely follow through on up to six out of all the plans to build crackers in the US, with Dow Chemical being one of them, an executive with the company said on Thursday.

"We will be one of those five or six crackers," said Bill Weideman, chief financial officer for Dow.

Weideman spoke during the Deutsche Bank Global Industrials and Basic Materials Conference.

In addition to Dow, ExxonMobil, Formosa Plastics and Chevron Phillips Chemical (CP Chem) have announced plans to build crackers in the US.

If Dow's forecast holds true, that would leave up to two more crackers to be built in the US.

Shell is studying a site in Pennsylvania for a possible cracker.

Other companies that have discussed plans for a cracker include Thailand-based Indorama VenturesLyondellBasell, Aither Chemicals, SABIC, Sasol, Mexichem and Braskem.

The announcements followed the advent of shale gas, which is providing ethylene producers with low-cost natural gas liquids (NGLs) as feedstock.
