Canada chemical sales rise 2.2% in April from March

TORONTO (ICIS)--Canadian chemical sales rose 2.2% to Canadian dollar (C$) 4.12bn ($4.04bn) in April from March, a statistics agency said on Friday.

Compared with April 2011, Canadian chemical sales were up 6.4% year on year, Statistics Canada said.

Meanwhile, Canadian sales of plastics and rubber products fell 0.8% to C$1.91bn in April from March but were up 4.3% year on year from April 2011.

Overall Canadian manufacturing sales fell 0.8% to $49.1bn in April from March, marking their third decline in four months.

Canada’s aerospace product and parts industry and the petroleum and coal product industry posted the largest decreases in April, while sales of motor vehicles rose to their highest level since November 2007, the agency said.

Compared with April 2011, overall manufacturing sales were up 5.8% year on year.

Manufacturing inventories rose 1.0% to C$65.0bn in April from March.

The inventory-to-sales ratio was 1.32 in April, compared with 1.30 in March and 1.35 in April 2011. The ratio is a measure of the time, in months, that would be required to exhaust inventories if sales were to remain at their current level.
