SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Evonik Industries is building new plants with a total capacity of 50,000 tonnes/year for the production of isophorone and isophorone diamine in Shanghai, China, the German specialty chemicals maker said on Monday.

The group is investing more than €100m ($127m) in the project, which is scheduled to come on stream in the first quarter of 2014, the company said in a statement.

The company will hold the groundbreaking ceremony for the new plants at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park on 19 June, the statement added.

Output from the new facilities will primarily serve markets in China and the Asia-Pacific, according to the statement.

Isophorone and isophorone diamine, isophorone diisocyanate and their derivatives are important components for the production of industrial flooring, artificial leather, paints and coatings.
