HOUSTON (ICIS)--PPG Industries plans to license certain chloride-based titanium dioxide (TiO2) technologies to China’s Henan Billions Chemicals, the US-based chemicals firm said on Tuesday.

PPG Industries said that under a memorandum of understanding signed with Henan Billions, the Chinese producer would use the technologies at refinement facilities in China.

In addition, PPG signed a long-term purchase agreement for TiO2 with Henan Billions, it said.

PPG intends to use chloride-based TiO2 manufactured by Henan Billions for various end-use applications, including paints and coatings, it said. The TiO2 produced by Henan would also be available for sale to third parties, PPG added.

“This agreement with Henan Billions provides further evidence of PPG’s commitment to utilise our existing expertise to expand and secure additional global supply of TiO2,” said PPG’s chief technology officer Charles Kahle.

In April, PPG agreed to work with Canadian titanium dioxide (TiO2) producer Argex Mining on manufacturing TiO2 pigments.

PPG used to manufacture TiO2, using the chloride process, at a plant in Natrium, West Virginia.
