LONDON (ICIS)--Members of Cefic’s board have called on political leaders to create a stronger, more integrated Europe to improve the competitiveness of the region and its chemicals industry, the trade body said on Thursday.

Members of the board of Brussels-based Cefic published a signed open letter to European heads of state and government stating that Europe’s manufacturing industry is essential for sustainable growth, adding that the climate of uncertainty is putting this at risk.

“The future strength of the European Union is at stake and so is that of the euro,” the letter said.

“We, leaders of the European chemical industry, will support European governments and institutions in being bold and ambitious. It is time to create a stronger, more integrated Europe,” the letter added.

“In particular, we ask you to adopt policies that will foster a competitive European economy by building a lean regulatory framework; by stimulating innovation, education and job creation; and by ensuring secure energy supplies at competitive prices,” the letter said.

This would provide the stability and predictability that Europe’s industry needs and thereby encourage investment and entrepreneurship, the letter added.

The signed open letter is the first time members of the European chemical sector have expressed their views in this way, said Cefic.
