HOUSTON (ICIS)--US June sales of passenger cars and light trucks increased 22.1% year on year, an industry publication said on Tuesday.
Autodata reported that sales of passenger cars and light trucks in June totalled 1,285,555 units, up from 1,053,248 sold in the same month a year ago.
The increase is largely due to improvements in the weather and the availability of parts and supplies that last year were hampered by the earthquake and tsunami that ravaged Japan.
Sales for the first six months of the year were up 14.8% year on year at 7,272,160 vehicles, compared with 6,332,566 in the first six months of 2011.
This rate is ahead of the rate set for the first five months of the year which was a 13.4% growth, year on year, compared with 2011.
The US automobile industry comprises one of the major segments for chemicals such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), nylon 6 and nylon 6,6, polycarbonate (PC) and several synthetic fibres and paints and coatings.
The American Chemistry Council (ACC) estimates that each automobile contains an average of $3,297 (€2,605) worth of chemicals.
All six major auto manufacturers in the US reported more cars and light trucks sold in May of this year over last year’s June.
The largest number of units sold was reported by General Motors (GM) Corp, which sold 248,750 cars and light trucks in June, up by 15.5%. For the year, GM has sold 1,315,713 units, an increase of 4.3% over the same time frame in 2011.
The largest year on year increase was reported by Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., which sold 60.3% more cars and light trucks in June 2012, with 177,973 units sold. That number put Toyota as the manufacturer with the third largest number of units sold in June.
Ford Motor Company sold 207,204 vehicles in June 2012, compared with 193,415 a year ago, an increase of 7.1%.
Chrysler sold 144,811 vehicles, a 20.3% increase over the same month a year ago.
American Honda Motor Co reported a 48.8% increase in the number of units sold, year on year, with 124,808 sold.
Nissan North America sold 92,237 vehicles in June, up by 28.2% from the 71,941 units it sold in June 2011.
