A corrected story follows.
SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Pingmei Shenma Energy & Chemical is running its 200,000 dry metric tonne (dmt)/year caustic soda plant in Henan province at 60% capacity after restarting it on 9 July, a company source said late on Tuesday.
The plant was shut for about two weeks of maintenance, the source added.
Nonetheless, the plant restart is expected to ease the tight supply in Henan, the source said.
Chlor-alkali producers in Henan are running their plants at low operating rates because of the weak demand for chlorine. Chlorine is a co-product of caustic soda.
As a result of the low operating rates, caustic soda supply tightened and prices in the province were at CNY3,100-3,150/tonne on 10 July, up by CNY100/tonne compared with the same period a month earlier, Chemease data showed.
The producer’s offer for 32% liquid membrane caustic soda was at yuan (CNY) 3,150/tonne ($495/tonne) in Henan on 10 July, according to Chemease, an ICIS service in China.
Pingmei Shenma is a key caustic soda producer and a major supplier of alumina in Henan province.
($1 = CNY6.37)
