MELBOURNE (ICIS)--East China-based Wuxi Baichuan Chemical Industrial has postponed the start-up of its 300,000 tonne/year ethyl acetate (etac)/butyl acetate (butac) swing plant at Nantong in Jiangsu province to the end of July, a company source said on Wednesday.

The start-up has been delayed from May-June because of slow demand and weak margins for solvents in recent weeks, the source said.

Baichuan Chemical plans to produce 100,000 tonnes/year of etac and 200,000 tonnes/year of butac when the Nantong plant begins commercial operations later this month.

The company has only been producing butac at its existing 200,000 tonne/year etac/butac swing plant at Jiangyin, also in Jiangsu province.

Etac, which is mainly produced by the esterification of ethanol with acetic acid, is used in coating formulations such as epoxys and vinyls, as well as in solvent applications for inks and food.

Butac, which is derived from acetic acid and n-butanol (NBA), is mainly used in the manufacture of lacquers and coatings for the furniture, construction and automotive sectors.
