US melamine imports up 5% in May year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US melamine imports in May increased 5% from the same month in 2011, according to data released by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Wednesday.

US melamine imports rose to 3,885 tonnes in May from 3,703 tonnes in May of last year.

Imports rose mainly because of increased product brought in from Trinidad & Tobago.

May imports also increased from 1,892 tonnes in April.

Trinidad & Tobago at 2,100 tonnes was the major source of US melamine imports, followed by the Netherlands at 1,020 tonnes and Germany at 609 tonnes.

The US exported 2,706 tonnes of melamine in May, up from 2,377 tonnes in April.

Canada at 1,014 tonnes was the major destination for US melamine, followed by the UK at 421 tonnes, Romania at 400 tonnes and Norway at 366 tonnes.

Other destinations included Japan, Colombia, Russia, Venezuela, Argentina and Brazil.

The US exported 2,369 tonnes of melamine resins in May, down from 2,382 tonnes in April, but up from 2,308 tonnes in May 2011.

Major destinations included China at 580 tonnes, Mexico at 463 tonnes and Canada at 311 tonnes.

Other destinations included Brazil, Korea, India, Indonesia, Australia, Thailand and Taiwan.
