HOUSTON (ICIS)--US sorbitol imports in May were down by 10% from the same month last year, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Wednesday.

US sorbitol imports fell to 496 tonnes from 551 tonnes in May 2011, mainly because German imports were cut by half.

This year's May imports also fell from 672 tonnes in April, mainly because of reduced shipments from Indonesia and France.

Indonesia, at 399 tonnes, was the major source of US sorbitol imports, followed by Germany at 67 tonnes and China at 29 tonnes.

The US exported 3,855 tonnes of sorbitol in May, down from 4,229 tonnes in the same month of 2011 but up from 3,442 tonnes in April this year.

Major destinations for US sorbitol were Canada at 1,526 tonnes, Mexico at 1,246 tonnes and Argentina at 403 tonnes.

Other destinations included Australia, Colombia, China, Egypt, India, South Korea and Brazil.
