HOUSTON (ICIS)--US caustic soda exports in May were 360,433 tonnes, down by 2.6% from the 370,140 tonnes shipped the same month a year earlier, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Wednesday.
Exports in April were also 30.4% higher than the 276,392 tonnes shipped in April, the ITC said.
US production of caustic soda has fallen in recent months along with chlorine, its by-product in the electrolysis process. Chlorine is used extensively in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). PVC demand, in both the domestic and export markets, has been dampened recently.?xml:namespace>
Brazil was the top destination for US caustic soda exports in May at 170,588 tonnes, followed by Canada, Japan and Jamaica.
Major producers of US caustic soda include Georgia Gulf, Formosa Plastics, OxyChem, Shintech, Dow, Olin and PPG Industries.
