SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Chemicals (SSMC) started construction at its 400,000 tonne/year phenol/acetone plant in Shanghai, the company said on Thursday.

Formal construction began earlier this week on 10 July, and the groundbreaking ceremony for the plant was held on 18 November 2011, the company said in a statement.

The plant, which is located at Shanghai Chemical Industrial Park (SCIP), will be able to produce 250,000 tonnes/year of phenol and 150,000 tonnes/year of acetone, according to a company source.

The construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2013, according to an earlier report from ICIS.

Financial details about the plant were not disclosed.

SSMC is a joint venture between China’s Sinopec and Japan’s Mitsui Chemicals.
