SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Mitsubishi Chemical has granted Germany’s BASF the license to use the Japanese firm’s patented vinylene carbonate for electrolyte formulations in the production of lithium-ion batteries, the two companies said in a joint statement on Tuesday.

“Additionally, the agreement provides BASF with the right to grant sub-licenses to cell manufacturers that use electrolyte formulations made by BASF or Mitsubishi Chemical,” they said.

The deal constitutes the transfer of the licensing agreement previously established between Mitsubishi Chemical and the electrolytes business of German chemical and pharmaceutical firm Merck.

Merck’s electrolytes business was recently acquired by BASF.
